About the Ukrainian Language and Literature Course

The degree course of the Ukrainian Language and Literature specialty is provided at the first (Bachelor of Arts in Ukrainian Language and Literature) and second (Master of Arts in Ukrainian Language and Literature) levels of higher education. The aim of the program in Ukrainian Language and Literature is to prepare professional linguists and to provide students with a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of the Ukrainian language, its structure, grammar, and vocabulary, as well as its rich literary tradition. 

Ukrainian Language is an East Slavic language and is the official language of Ukraine. The Ukrainian Language is a native Slavic language for more than 40 million people around the globe. It is widely spoken by Ukrainians living in different parts of the world, including Spain, Poland, Canada, and the United States. During the Soviet era, Ukrainian literature was subject to censorship and repression but despite this, many Ukrainian writers continued to produce influential works of art and pieces of literature.

The Educational Process

All IEU, Malta Campus students use booths for interpreters during their practical classes. The booths used for synchronized translation are typically called “interpretation booths” or “translation booths”. They are soundproofed structures that allow interpreters to listen to the original speech and provide simultaneous interpretation into the target language(s) without disturbing the audience.

To study the Ukrainian Language and Literature in a complex manner, the IEU, Malta Campus students must first acquire a strong foundation in the Ukrainian language. It involves studying the alphabet, grammar, syntax, vocabulary, and pronunciation. Once the IEU, Malta Campus students have a solid understanding of the Ukrainian language, they begin to study Ukrainian literature in depth. It involves analyzing literary works from different periods, genres, and styles, and understanding the historical, cultural, and social contexts in which they were written.

The influence of foreign domination over Ukrainian territories, including the Poland-Lithuania Commonwealth and the Ottoman Empire has enriched Ukrainian culture and language, allowing Ukrainian authors to produce unique literary works. Ukrainian literature has long been a source of inspiration for resistance to imperialism around the globe. As a result, after Ukrainian independence in 1991, Ukrainian literature has become a major inspiration for a new generation of modern writers and thinkers. The Ukrainian Language and Literature program at the International European University, Malta Campus focuses on exploring and deep understanding of Ukrainian culture and history. Students are encouraged to explore the rich cultural heritage of Ukraine, including its music, art, folklore, and traditions. 

Future Ukrainian Language professionals obtain the necessary knowledge and competencies to be able to:

• exploit the principal bibliographical reference tools used in the different disciplines of linguistics and literature;
• construct a research hypothesis and defend it using the appropriate methodology in a piece of personal work;
• describe the current scholarly state of the investigation concerning a linguistics issue and produce a bibliography;
• demonstrate an ability to put into effect the instructions for a significant piece of work (including respecting deadlines) and an ability to discuss and interact; constructively with a supervisor;
• carry out a piece of work according to the scientific method as well as learn to apply critical analytical skills to the study of any type of information or document;
• construct clear and sophisticated reasoning, use appropriate terminology, put a question in its theoretical context, establish a hypothesis and verify it;
• analyze, synthesize, and identify the objectives of important ideas in any complex text or piece of reasoning;
• gain a thorough understanding of the principles of argumentative writing;
• learn to write a piece of academic work by the norms and ethics of academic writing (bibliographical references, use of quotations, notes, etc.);
• develop a practical command of the different forms of academic communication for conveying a research finding (oral presentation, written dissertation, text analysis & commentary, review, etc.);
• learn to systematically express and apply the standard rules of Ukrainian spelling and prescriptive grammar by acquiring a command of its metalanguage and understanding the norms of grammar on a theoretical level;
• learn to carry out a morphosyntactic and syntactic analysis of contemporary written and spoken Ukrainian;
• learn the fundamental principles of corpus linguistics and how to produce a quantitative and qualitative analysis of a corpus;
• acquire in-depth knowledge of the historical-political and sociocultural events that have conditioned the emergence of Ukrainian, its diffusion, and development;
• acquire in-depth knowledge and skills in phonetics and the historical morphology of Ukrainian as well as acquire an ability to think critically about linguistic variation and how language functions and evolves;
• learn to read and understand a medieval literary text in ancient or middle Ukrainian and to translate it into modern Ukrainian as well as identify its poetic and aesthetic characteristics;
• work with documents and reproduce the information in another language in written media, such as articles and books;
• explaining and dictating concepts;
• use these verbal communication skills to transfer information from one person to another;
• understand non-verbal communication cues and how they interact with verbal communication;
• understand how people use their body language to support their statements or differences between body language across different cultures;
• use body language correctly to convey the right message and adhere to cultural norms;
• build functional professional relationships with others in the industry and help students make requests, provide updates, and set boundaries in the workplace;
• understand the meaning of words and phrases and the context in which to use them.
