About the Musicology Course

The degree course of the Musicology speciality is provided at the first (Bachelor of Arts in Musicology) and Second (Master of Arts in Musicology) levels of higher education. The Musicology program at the International European University, Ukraine – Malta Campus is incredibly broad, involving the study of history, anthropology, communication, and even religion.

Musicology at IEU, Ukraine – Malta Campus combines a humanistic approach typical of a liberal arts degree, with a focus on communication, critical thinking and listening, and global awareness. Students can choose specialized coursework in music history or ethnomusicology, and work closely with musicology faculty throughout their studies.

The program in Musicology provides a broad overview of the individual subdisciplines of musicology, focusing in particular on the older and modern history of European music, music from outside Europe, contemporary and popular music, music theory, as well as the scientific, social-scientific, and cultural fundamentals of music. In addition, students obtain qualifications that apply to practice, such as basic knowledge of editorial techniques, sound and image recording, librarianship, archive studies, and museums, as well as the media business. By the end of the degree programme, students have to provide evidence of knowledge of Latin.

The Educational Process

The academic program in Musicology at IEU, Ukraine – Malta Campus consists of an Introductory and Orientation Period, the compulsory module Academic Writing and Research Methods, compulsory modules on the core topics of musicology, and a group of elective modules, from which students can choose various specializations. To complete the bachelor’s and master’s programs, students have to write theses.

• To demonstrate and apply the research skills necessary for a musical and contextual understanding of musical elements and relevance;
• To demonstrate the conducting and technical skills necessary to effectively and artistically lead a collaborative rehearsal;
• To create original or derivative music;
• To demonstrate and apply the knowledge and performance skills sufficient to teach beginning students on instruments and/or in a voice as appropriate to the chosen areas of specialization;
• To demonstrate and apply knowledge of content, methodologies, philosophies, pedagogies, materials, technologies, and curriculum development in music education;
• To will demonstrate through solo and collaborative performances the achievement of professional, entry-level competence in the major performance area;
• To demonstrate and apply relevant pedagogies and the self-assessment necessary for teaching and continuing education in his or her performance area;
• To demonstrate the use of basic concepts, tools, techniques, and procedures to develop a composition from concept to finished product;
• To demonstrate the tools necessary for the realization of compositions from completion to performance;
• To demonstrate the ability to work on and manage a team in a music industry-related project;
• To demonstrate a basic knowledge of economics, accounting, business law, management, and marketing.
