The Educational Process

The study of Linguistics at IEU, Ukraine – Malta Campus draws on methods and knowledge from a wide range of disciplines. The study of meaning draws on philosophy, the analysis of the speech signal uses methods from physics and engineering, and the study of language acquisition draws on psychology. This variety is one of the things that makes linguistics fascinating: one day you might be poring over a medieval text for evidence of how the grammar of a language has changed, and the next, learning about how the larynx creates sound energy for speech, or how we can record brain responses in a categorization task.

The School of Humanities at IEU, Ukraine – Malta Campus has a pool of researchers in languages and literacies who view language as a powerful social and cultural phenomenon and adopt a range of socially oriented approaches towards the study of the language across the lifespan. A wide range of theoretical and methodological approaches are used, including cognitive stylistics, complexity theory, corpus linguistics, discourse analysis, second language acquisition theory, eye-tracking, multimodal analysis, linguistic ethnography, metaphor theory, literary theory and criticism, semiotics, systemic functional linguistics, sociocultural theory, social network theory, and sociolinguistics. These approaches are used to explore language in many contexts such as language education, teaching and learning across the curriculum, social work, medical humanities, conflict resolution, language policy, translation, digitally mediated communication, social media, language, and globalization.

After graduating students are able:

• Grasp the complexity of language as a communication system shaped by cognitive, biological, cultural, and social factors;
• Demonstrate understanding of the concepts, theories, and methodologies used by linguists in qualitative and quantitative analyses of linguistic structure, and patterns of language use;
• Demonstrate understanding of processes of language change and variation, the role of language in reflecting and constructing social identities, and the distinctive properties of human language;
• Can collect, organize and analyze linguistic data from diverse languages, to form hypotheses about language structure/use and to test those hypotheses against new data;
• Acquire the technical vocabulary and theoretical tools of the field, necessary to read published linguistic research;
• Can synthesize research findings and construct a readable, well-supported research report;
• Are ready for significant scholarly participation in the field of linguistics;
• Know the research areas related to the language;
• Establish a relationship between linguistics and language teaching;
• Interpret the linguistic data obtained or observed in the course of language teaching;
• Know the definitions of man’s language;
• Establish the modern linguistic research between language definitions and research methods;
• Define the roles of language as a communication medium;
• Identify the grammatical and phonemic components of the tongue;
• Recognize the components of sound science and sound knowledge;
• Analyze the morphological organizations;
• Detect misspellings and help to remove mistakes;
• Detect pronunciation mistakes, and make mistakes disappear;
• Identify the source of errors that occur in the language learning process;
• Engage collaboratively with other linguists, such as classmates or professors, to produce a coherent analysis;
• Be able to answer research questions via syntactic, semantic, or phonological analysis; by designing and executing a simple experiment; or by engaging in other kinds of research used by linguists;
