The degree course of the Japanese Language and Literature specialty is provided at the first (Bachelor of Arts in Japanese Language and Literature) and Second (Master of Arts in Japanese Language and Literature) levels of higher education. The Japanese language is a member of the Japonic language family, which also includes the Ryukyuan languages spoken in Okinawa and other nearby islands.   • carry out a piece of work according to the scientific method as well as learn to apply critical analytical skills to the study of any type of information or document;
  • construct clear and sophisticated reasoning, use appropriate terminology, put a question in its theoretical context, establish a hypothesis and verify it;
  • analyze, synthesize, and identify the objectives of important ideas in any complex text or piece of reasoning;
  • gain a thorough understanding of the principles of argumentative writing;
  • learn to write a piece of academic work by the norms and ethics of academic writing (bibliographical references, use of quotations, notes, etc.);
  • develop a practical command of the different forms of academic communication for conveying a research finding (oral presentation, written dissertation, text analysis & commentary, review, etc.);
  • learn to systematically express and apply the standard rules of Japanese spelling and prescriptive grammar by acquiring a command of its metalanguage and understanding the norms of grammar on a theoretical level;
  • learn to carry out a morphosyntactic and syntactic analysis of contemporary written and spoken Japanese;
  • learn the fundamental principles of corpus linguistics and how to produce a quantitative and qualitative analysis of a corpus;
  • acquire in-depth knowledge of the historical-political and sociocultural events that have conditioned the emergence of Japanese, its diffusion, and development;
  • acquire in-depth knowledge and skills in phonetics and the historical morphology of Japanese as well as acquire an ability to think critically about linguistic variation and how language functions and evolves;
  • learn to read and understand a medieval literary text in ancient or middle Japanese and to translate it into modern Japanese as well as identify its poetic and aesthetic characteristics;
  • work with documents and reproduce the information in another language in written media, such as articles and books;
  • explaining and dictating concepts;
  • use these verbal communication skills to transfer information from one person to another;
  • understand non-verbal communication cues and how they interact with verbal communication;
  • understand how people use their body language to support their statements or differences between body language across different cultures;
  • use body language correctly to convey the right message and adhere to cultural norms;
