About the Gender Studies Course

The degree course of the Gender Studies speciality is provided at the first (Bachelor of Arts in Gender Studies) and Second (Master of Arts in Gender Studies) levels of higher education. Gender Studies degree at the International European University, Ukraine – Malta Campus is a field that comprehensively explores human sexuality and gender.

The School of Gender Studies at IEU, Ukraine – Malta Campus strives to understand gender studies as an interdisciplinary field open to different approaches, and we engage in theoretical debates across this broad field.

We aim to understand gender as it relates to other social relations, structures of power and subject positions (such as class, “race”/ethnicity, nationality, sexuality, generation, and ableness). These intersecting structures and relations are studied by recognizing local specificities, transnational processes, and global inequalities. Gender Studies at IEU, Ukraine – Malta Campus prepares the next generation of global citizens to rise above.

After graduating students are able:

  • Describe and critically reflect on how they and others have experienced privilege and oppression in relation to sex, gender, or sexuality;
  • Describe and critically reflect on how they and others have experienced privilege and oppression in relation to sex, gender, or sexuality;
  • Describe struggles against sexism and heterosexism and patterns of resistance that dismantle hierarchies of sex, genders, and sexualities;
  • Examine the intersections of gender, sex, and sexuality with other categories such as race, ethnicity, socio-economic class, age, and ability at local, national, and/or global levels;
  • Identify major influences within key historic feminist movements. These influences may include activists, authors and/or writings, or legislation;
  • Articulate how women’s studies and gender studies is a distinct field connected to other interdisciplinary fields of study;
  • Evaluate, compare, and critique gender and feminist theories and methodologies;
  • Identify the interactions and intersections of identities and assess how they contribute to instances of privilege and power dynamics across cultures, space, and time;
  • Recognize their relationship within their communities and understand that actions (or inactions) are integral to overcoming inequalities;
  • Connect theory with practice through a service learning or internship experience;
  • Identify and employ legitimate sources of information covering social inequalities and injustices;
  • Read current social inequities effectively and suggest solutions based on feminist methodologies;

  • Describe human rights ideas and frameworks, including the history and implementation of United Nations conventions and treaties concerning women;
  • Analyze the complex and gendered social, economic, and political aspects of globalization that disproportionately disadvantage and impact women in various locations around the world;
  • Critically assess discourses related to women in the global context, including images and messages in the media, approaches, and representations utilized by nongovernmental organizations, and language and methods within the United Nations human rights domain.
