About the Biophysics Course

The degree course of the Biophysics specialty is provided at the first (Bachelor of Arts in Biophysics) and Second (Master of Arts in Biophysics) levels of higher education.  Because of multiple technological breakthroughs over the last decade that allow the gathering of large amounts of new kinds of data, biology has become a particularly exciting frontier of science, not only at a fundamental level but because of new opportunities to apply basic insights to medicine and health care.

It turns out that physics has played an important role in developing many of the new technologies that have helped biology to advance, and it further turns out that many of the conceptual, experimental, and theoretical skills of physicists have turned out to be valuable for understanding biological problems. Biophysics is an interdisciplinary subject that involves the frontiers of physics and biology. Biophysics is the bridge that connects the fundamental laws governing electricity and magnetism, thermodynamics, and classical and quantum mechanics with the way biological organisms, including ourselves, sense, move, eat, reproduce, and get sick.

Biophysicists aim first to understand biological systems from the perspective of physical laws and models, and second to study biological systems using physical techniques. The biophysics major at International European University, Ukraine – Malta Campus is a rigorous program involving a core education in physics, biology, and chemistry, along with integrated biophysics courses and an exciting range of electives including experimental and research opportunities. The degree in biophysics at IEU, Ukraine – Malta Campus is a great choice for students who enjoy math and physics but are interested in problems related to biology or medicine. Biophysics has contributed to breakthroughs in microscopy, including the development of electron and atomic force microscopy and fluorescent imaging techniques, techniques that have revealed the structures inside of cells and are critical to present-day research.

The Educational Process

In the first two years at IEU, Ukraine – Malta Campus students take foundation courses in math, physics, chemistry, and biology. In the second two years, students take specialized courses in biophysics, physics, and biology. Biophysics majors also complete at least two semesters of independent research. This curriculum prepares students to succeed in today’s interdisciplinary research and technology environment.

Many of the most important advances in biotechnology and medicine are occurring at the intersection between biology, physics, computer science, and engineering. The biophysics major provides the broad math and science skills necessary to compete in this interdisciplinary environment. More importantly, students are encouraged to think independently. This establishes problem-solving skills useful throughout life.

Biophysics students gain practical experience through hands-on projects in classes at IEU, Ukraine – Malta Campus as well as a senior capstone research project or professional internship. Facilities are available for student research in nonlinear optics, condensed-matter physics, and nuclear physics. The majority of our graduates go to graduate school in physics and related fields or take engineering-related positions in technical industries.

After graduating students are able:

Compulsory Subjects

The curriculum covers a comprehensive range of subjects. The major subjects (or modules) are:

Career Perspectives

What do biophysicists do? Biophysics is a rigorous major with experimental, theoretical, fundamental, and applied aspects. As such, it is an excellent foundation for careers in scientific research and administration, industry and manufacturing, sales and marketing, law and policy, medicine and healthcare, teaching, business and finance, and conservation. Biophysics design, build and employ research and medical instruments for spectroscopy, imaging, structure determination, and radiation therapy. Detect, purify, characterize, design, and image chemicals and materials. Understand and modify microorganisms and, in turn, local and global cycles for water, energy, nutrients, and pollutants. After completing the professional education program of the specialty «Biophysics» at IEU, Ukraine – Malta Campus a specialist can perform professional work as:
