About the Biomedical Sciences Course

The degree course of the Biomedical Sciences specialty is provided at the first (Bachelor of Arts in Biomedical Science) and Second (Master of Arts in Biomedical Science) levels of higher education. Biomedical science focuses on how cells, organs, and systems function in the human body; an exciting and dynamic area that is highly relevant to the understanding and treatment of human diseases.

The Educational Process

Our Biomedical Sciences course at IEU, Ukraine – Malta Campus will give you a grounding in a range of medically related disciplines, including physiology, pharmacology, neuroscience, cell biology, microbiology, anatomy and histology, genetics, biochemistry, and immunology. You will learn how to apply biology-based science for medical use through research, health monitoring, or treatment. After graduating students are able:

• Students will demonstrate knowledge of the central dogma of biology and predict outcomes when the process malfunctions;
• Students will demonstrate an ability to use evolutionary theory and related equations to model and predict population change or stability;
• Students will demonstrate an ability to evaluate the impact of structure/part modification on a biological system and/or relationships between systems;
• Students will demonstrate the application of the formal practices of observation, experimentation, and hypothesis testing;
• Students will demonstrate an ability to evaluate pertinent values to ethical dilemmas using multiple ethical frameworks;
• Students will demonstrate an ability to communicate knowledge about a research topic including organization, critical analysis, content, presentation, formatting, and stylistic choices;
• Students will be able to apply their understanding of the fundamentals of chemistry and biology to explain the key principles of biochemistry, microbiology, and molecular and cellular biology;
• Students will be able to consistently develop strategies to produce accurate and/or feasible solutions to complex quantitative and qualitative problems;
• Students will demonstrate competency in the ability to work well both independently and collaboratively and to conduct, analyze, and report research findings;
• Students will exercise responsible and ethical conduct in scholarship and research demonstrating honesty, accuracy, efficiency, and objectivity while upholding the highest standards of integrity and professionalism;
• Students will be able to successfully demonstrate synthetic and integrative thinking when applying the scientific method from the development of a hypothesis, design and implementation of experiments, and data analysis, to the formation of plausible conclusions that are relevant to the field;
• Students will be able to effectively, clearly, and accurately communicate both published and novel research findings in several ways, including but not limited to the acquisition and maintenance of data records, written manuscripts, oral presentations, and multimedia presentations as they relate to the current knowledge of the field;
• Students will demonstrate competent use of appropriate technology to observe and accurately characterize molecular and cellular phenomena;
• Formulate a biomedical problem, translate it into a scientific question, and determine an experimental strategy to deal with it;
• Manipulate biological and chemical equipment, demonstrating manual dexterity and observing laboratory best practices, including safety and waste management standards;
• Use measuring and imaging instruments appropriately, as well as the IT tools associated with them;
• Ensure effective reproducibility through accurate and thorough know-how;
• Robustly analyze the observations in order to draw interpretations from them; identify analogical and deductive reasonings; identify correlation and causality;
• On the basis of the above reasonings, present a detailed argument of the results by comparing them with the bibliographical data (critical analysis);
• Recognize the failures and identify their causes;
• Understand and employ a precise and specific biomedical vocabulary adapted to the applications of biomedicine;
• Draft a precise protocol, note the observations in detail in a laboratory notebook, and write a clear, informative, and exhaustive report on a series of observations or experiments;
• Use the rules enabling effective verbal communication of projects, published data, or the results of experiments;
• Demonstrate the internal consistency of the results and incorporate them into the published knowledge bases.
